Anita Hill, Professor of Social Policy, Law, and Women’s Studies at Brandeis University will speak about “The Value of Belonging: Reimagining Equality in the 21st Century” as part of Western University’s Canada-U.S. Institute and its Visiting Fellows Program.
The free public event is scheduled for Tuesday, March 13, 2012 in Conron Hall (Room 224), University College. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. The talk begins at 5:00 p.m., with a book sale and signing to follow.
Anita Hill rose to prominence in 1991 when her highly publicized testimony during the Supreme Court confirmation hearings for Justice Clarence Thomas prompted a national conversation about sexual harassment and women’s equality in the workplace. Since then, she has authored numerous books and articles on race, gender equality, and civil rights. Her most recent work is Reimagining Equality: Stories of Gender, Race, and Finding Home (2011). She has appeared on several television programs, such as Face the Nation and Meet the Press, and her commentary has been published in Newsweek, the New York Times, and the Boston Globe.
“We are delighted that Professor Hill will be visiting Western,” says Don Abelson, Director of the Centre for American Studies and the Canada-U.S. Institute. “She has an important presence in American legal and political circles, and will undoubtedly touch on issues of considerable importance to Canada and the United States.”
This event is co-sponsored by the Canada-U.S. Institute and the Centre for American Studies with a contribution from the Department of Women’s Studies and Feminist Research, and the Social Science Student Donation Fund.
The Canada-U.S. Institute introduced its Visiting Fellows Program in 2011. The program brings high profile policy-makers, journalists, and scholars from Canada and the United States to Western to speak and write about critical issues confronting decision-makers engaged in this vitally important bi-lateral relationship. Visiting Fellows of the Institute are invited to give a public lecture at the university and to lead a seminar with smaller groups of graduate and undergraduate students studying Canada-U.S. relations. Professor Hill is the Institute’s third Visiting Fellow. Previous Visiting Fellows were Ralph Nader and David Frum.
