Four etchings by Rembrandt, easily one of the most recognizable names in the history of art, are coming to Western University for an exhibit, which runs from February 13 to April 5.
On loan from the National Gallery of Canada, the incoming collection titled “Storms and Bright Skies: Three Centuries of Dutch Landscapes” explores the emergence of landscape art in the early 17th century, its blossoming during the Golden Age, and its continuation during the 18th and 19th centuries.
Media are invited to an opening reception on Thursday, February 13 at 7:30 p.m., which will include remarks from Richard Dirk ter Vrugt, Netherlands Council and Her Worship Joanne Vanderheyden, Mayor of the Municipality of Strathroy-Caradoc and a Member of Western’s University Board of Governors, for the opening reception. 
The exhibition, which includes prints, drawings and etchings from the likes of Rembrandt and Jacob van Ruisdael, captures the beauty and character of the Dutch landscape over three centuries, while demonstrating its significance to the region’s economic, military and scientific development.
“This exhibition provides a rare opportunity to see fine examples of Dutch art, including four remarkable etchings by Rembrandt. Having reclaimed so much of their land from the sea, it is not surprising that the Dutch invented the idea of landscape art,” explains James Patten, McIntosh Gallery’s Director and Chief Curator. “While these images of canals and windmills may appear quaint to us today, they in fact reveal the unprecedented technological developments of the period, as advances in engineering transformed our relationship with the environment.”
The four Rembrandt etchings featured in the collection are The Windmill (1641), Landscape with a Cottage and a Large Tree (1641), The Three Trees (1643) and Landscape with Trees, Farm Building and a Tower (1650).
