Pharmaceutical companies fund the bulk of clinical research and heavily cited Canadian researcher Joel Lexchin believes this funding introduces biases through methods such as influencing the choice of standards, only publishing positive trials and reinterpreting data submitted to regulatory agencies.

Lexchin says there is no evidence that any of the measures introduced through legislation have stopped these biases and what is needed is a paradigm change in the relationship between pharmaceutical companies and the conduct and reporting of clinical trials.

The co-author of “Drugs of Choice: A Formulary for General Practice” and author of “Drug Therapy for Emergency Physicians,” Lexchin will deliver a free public lecture titled “Those Who Have the Gold Make the Evidence: The Pharmaceutical Industry and Clinical Trials” at Western University’s Dr. David Chu International Student Centre (Western Student Services Building, Room 2130) on Thursday, April 10 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Lexchin is an emergency physician at The University Health Network and a Professor in the School of Health Policy and Management at York University and an Associate Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto.

This is the fifth installment of The Lives of Evidence National Lecture Series, which examines the cultural, ethical, political and scientific role of evidence in our world. It is presented by the Rotman Institute of Philosophy (https://www.rotman.uwo.ca/) and Situating Science.
