Western University’s Board of Governors has re-appointed Provost & Vice President (Academic) Janice Deakin to a second five-year term, ending on July 30, 2020. The unanimous decision comes a full year before the current term’s expiration on July 30, 2015.
Since her appointment in 2010, Deakin has led several key initiatives designed to increase Western’s offerings to students and enhance its standing on the international stage.
“The Board is firmly united in our admiration of Dr. Deakin’s leadership during her first term,” said Western’s Board chair Chirag Shah. “She has led the University through a very comprehensive strategic planning exercise, bringing together a diverse group of people from across campus to build consensus on the way forward.”
In 2011, Deakin oversaw the establishment of Western International to direct and support the University’s international strategy, including fostering international learning opportunities, recruiting and supporting international students and enhancing Western’s overall global activity and awareness. She appointed the University’s first Vice-Provost (International) in May 2012.
Another of Deakin’s significant accomplishments was reorganizing the Vice-Provost (Academic Programs and Students) [registrar] office into three portfolios: Vice-Provost (Academic Programs), Associate Vice-President (Student Experience), and University Registrar, thereby strengthening Western’s commitment to the student experience.
“Dr. Deakin has established a reputation among Western’s faculty, students, staff and alumni as an insightful, energetic and experienced academic leader,” said Western President Amit Chakma. “She has demonstrated her dedication to helping our community address the challenges it faces on a daily basis, while enabling Western to provide students with an outstanding learning experience and positioning them to achieve excellence on the world stage.”
Deakin has been instrumental in fostering a leadership renewal in several Western faculties recruiting six new Deans and reappointing two. She has also helped raise Western’s international reputation for research and teaching by leading Western’s Clusters of Research Excellence Program, as well as the Scholars in Residence Program.
Deakin was appointed to her role at Western after serving as Associate Vice-Principal (Academic) and Dean of Graduate Studies at Queen’s University. She holds three undergraduate degrees from Queen’s in psychology, physical education and education. She earned her Master of Science at McMaster University and her doctorate in kinesiology at the University of Waterloo.
