Centre for Research & Education on Violence against Women & Children hosts Father’s Day Breakfast and 20th anniversary lecture

Committed to the prevention of violence against women and children through knowledge-based innovation, collaboration and equality, Western University’s Centre for Research & Education on Violence against Women & Children (CREVAWC) is hosting a lecture in recognition of its 20th anniversary on Wednesday, May 28 featuring women’s rights legal expert Nathalie DesRosiers.

Earlier in the day, CREVAWC welcomes former CFL all-star quarterback Damon Allen and renowned leadership expert Joel Hilchey (https://www.joelhilchey.com/) to London for the 8th Annual Father’s Day Breakfast. The event, held at the Marconi Club, kicks off at 8 a.m.

Allen and Hilchey, who is founder of the Beanstalk Project, will share best practices on coaching boys into becoming better men with a focus on speaking out about violence against women.

At 4 p.m., DesRosiers, who serves as Dean of the Faculty of Law, Common Law Section at the University of Ottawa, will deliver the talk Canadians’ Understanding of Violence Against Women: Progress and Backlash over the Past Quarter Century, at Windermere Manor. The event runs until 6 p.m.

Des Rosiers recently served as the General Counsel for the Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA), a national organization that acts as a watchdog for the protection of human rights and civil liberties in Canada. In that capacity, she has appeared in front of Parliament and various legislative bodies and tribunals to defend the rule of law and constitutional protections.

A recipient of the Order of Canada in 2013, Des Rosiers was named to the Order of Ontario in 2012 and was named one of Canada’s 25 most influential lawyers in both 2011 and 2012. An expert in constitutional law, women’s rights and law reform, she co-authored the first book in French on Compensation for Sexual Violence with Louise Langevin in 1998.

Des Rosiers has an LLB from Université de Montréal and an LLM from Harvard University.
