Local Windsor family physician, Dr. Dale Ziter, is being recognized for his extraordinary commitment to his patients and community with the Regional Family Physician of the Year Award, presented by the Ontario College of Family Physicians (OCFP).

Dr. Ziter is the academic director for the Family Medicine Residency Program at Western University’s Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry – Windsor Program.

The Award recognizes the overall outstanding contributions of seven OCFP members across Ontario who consistently provide exemplary care to their patients and are passionately involved in activities that contribute to ongoing improvements and excellence in family medicine.

Award recipients are recognized for their expertise in areas including being a skilled clinician, teacher and learner, as well as community and visionary leader. The award was presented at The College of Family Physicians of Canada’s 15th Family Medicine Forum in Toronto on November 12, 2015.

“It’s an honour to receive the award because of the people who nominated me – colleagues, residents and patients,” said Dr. Ziter. “Windsor has a fantastic medical community, both from a clinical and teaching perspective. After 33 years, I still enjoy getting up and going to work, and I love looking after my patients.”

Born and raised in Windsor, Dr. Ziter returned to the city to practise medicine in 1984, and has served as a faculty member of Schulich Medicine – Windsor Campus for 15 years. Dr. Ziter maintains a group practice and is an active staff member of Windsor Regional Hospital Ouellette campus.

“From seeing patients in his local practice to actively recruiting medical residents for the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry – Windsor Program, Dr. Ziter has shown an unwavering commitment to the people of Windsor,” said Dr. Stephen Wetmore, chair, Department of Family Medicine. “True medical professionals understand that not only are we part of the community, we must always strive to contribute and help our communities prosper. For more than 30 years, Dr. Ziter has proved to be a compassionate physician, skilled teacher, mentor and leader.”

Dr. Ziter has been recognized with several awards during his career, including the Dr. Keith Johnson Scholarship Award in Family Medicine (2006) The College of Family Physicians Award of Excellence (2007), the Dr. Ian McWhinney Teacher of the Year Award for Family Medicine (2010), the Associate Dean’s Award of Excellence in Medical Education, University of Windsor (2011-2012), and the Southwestern Ontario Medical Education Network Teacher of the Year Award.
