In just a few days at a university that’s actually not too far away, characters from Alderaan to Dagobah will officially launch the 2015 Business Cares Food Drive campaign.

Western University will host a Star Wars-themed kickoff event, in conjunction with the launch of the annual Western Cares Food Drive, at London Hall on Tuesday, December 1 at 10 a.m.

Heading into its 16th campaign, Business Cares is hoping to surpass last year’s total of 290,870 pounds of food by at least one pound. The three-week campaign has been able to increase its donations to the London and Area Food Bank each year.

The London and Area Food Bank provides emergency food items for 3,160 families monthly – 39 per cent of them children – and more than 25 other social service agencies in the London area.

“There are many reasons individuals and families access the services of the London and Area Food Bank. Most people only use the food bank as a last resort. In fact, in 2014, 35 per cent of families came to the food bank only once in the year for help,” says Wayne Dunn, Business Cares Campaign Chair. “This year, the Food Bank is also changing its focus to remind supporters that healthier food donations are appreciated – think protein, think multigrain, think veggies.”

As always, the annual launch event for this year’s initiative will share exciting news about special activities planned for the 2015 campaign, as well as new partnerships and collaborations.
