Local St. Thomas physicians work double duty on the ice

When they’re not in the hospital, local physicians, Dr. Robert Black and Dr. James Menlove, are on the ice.

Dr. Black is the Elgin-Middlesex regional academic director for Western University’s Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, and a general surgeon at St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH). Dr. Menlove is an adjunct professor at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry and a physician in the Emergency and Anaesthesia departments at STEGH.

During the hockey season, they work double duty supporting local hockey teams. Dr. Black is the team physician for the St. Thomas Stars Jr. B Club. Dr. Menlove coaches his oldest son’s team, which is part of the St. Thomas Minor Hockey Association. He also serves as the trainer for his son’s St. Thomas Jr. Stars team.

Dr. Black’s 13-year involvement with community hockey is part of his career as a physician. “You can’t compartmentalize the gift of being a doctor, or the skill set that comes with it, from being a member of the community,” said Dr. Black. “When you go out into the public, everyone knows who you are. Being involved with the community is at the core of being a physician.”

Dr. Menlove’s community involvement is part of his life as a doctor and as a parent. “It’s important for my kids to see that my responsibilities extend beyond the hospital,” said Dr. Menlove. “My job as a trainer is not just for injuries, but it’s also for the kids’ mental health. As parents, coaches and trainers, our job is to cheer on our kids and be role models.”
