Western University will host its second annual Indigenous Awareness Week from March 7-13 in celebration of local Indigenous culture, art and scholarship.
Led by Western’s Indigenous Services, which is part of Western’s Student Experience portfolio, the week-long event seeks to enhance the presence and promote the achievements of Indigenous students, faculty, staff, and alumni who are generating integral contributions academically, and to the larger London community. All events are free and open to everyone.
Indigenous Awareness Week features a full slate of programming and begins Monday, March 7 with a Sunrise Ceremony at 7 a.m. in the Indigenous Services Learning Resource Centre, Western Student Services Building, Room 2100. A community breakfast will follow at 8 a.m. Both events are expected to set the cultural, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual tone for the week.
Highlights for the week include the Leaders in Indigenous Health Research Panel; an Indigenous film showcase in the McKellar Room, co-hosted by ImagineNative Film Festival; a Youth Career Fair and High School Panel; and a number of artistic displays, panel presentations, and symposia held at the University Community Centre (UCC) and the Indigenous Services Centre.
Indigenous Awareness Week closes on Sunday, March 13 with the 10th annual First Nations Students Association (FNSA) Pow Wow in the Mustang Lounge, which will serve as a cultural exclamation point to what will be an exciting celebration of Indigenous presence at Western.
