Western University hosts grand opening at new student residence.

Western University will officially open the doors at Ontario Hall, its newest student residence, on Tuesday morning with a reception and guided tours.

Ontario Hall is a modern, 5-storey residence housing 1,000 residents (600 as of September 2013), which will help Western continue its guarantee of accommodations for first year students, and provide extra capacity for upper-year students across the residence system.

“Western is known to have some of the best student residences in the country and Ontario Hall is certainly no exception,” said Susan Grindrod, Western’s Associate Vice-President (Housing & Ancillary Services). “Ontario Hall is a great example of how a residence can be designed to create an atmosphere of community and personal growth geared towards helping students reach their academic goals.”

Located at the southwest corner of Sarnia Road and Western Road, the residence is designed to provide the most comfortable living experience possible for Western students studying away from home.

As such, the residence features both double and single rooms and common areas, such as an Academic Café, lounges, study rooms, music practice rooms, exercise room, media room, and a health & wellness centre where students can access nutrition seminars, yoga classes and information about campus community resources.

An open concept dining room includes interactive cooking stations, made-to-order sushi bar, Mongolian-style grill and cushioned booths for a less institutional feel.

The residence also houses 10 private suites for faculty members or visiting scholars for short or longer-term stays.

Ontario Hall was designed and built to achieve a LEED Silver rating (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). The LEED green building rating system provides a recognized standard to measure the environmental sustainability of building designs and is overseen by the Canadian Green Building Council.
