Western hosts major international computer science conference

In 1998, the first-ever blog appeared online, Apple introduced the iMac and Internet Explorer passed Netscape in browser market share.

It was also the first year for the International Conference on Unconventional Computation and Natural Computation (UCNC), a global event where computer scientists with wide and diverse backgrounds convene to share ideas and present their latest findings.

This week, participants of the 13th annual UCNC have assembled at Western University in London, Ontario to continue the conversation started in Auckland, New Zealand in 1998 with a focus on current experimental and theoretical results from fields ranging from molecular and chaos computing to hyperbolic space computation and swarm intelligence.

Featured speakers present each morning at 9 a.m. in Western’s Conron Hall (University College) and include computing world all-stars like nanotechnologist Ned Seeman from New York University, biological computer developer Yaakov (Kobi) Benenson from ETH Zurich and quantum teleportation theorist Charles H. Bennett from IBM Research.

Mark Daley from Western’s Brain and Mind Institute and the Departments of Computer Science and Biology at Western’s Faculty of Science is also leading a workshop on Computational Neuroscience on Thursday, July 17 from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
