Rotman Institute of Philosophy appoints new Director

Western University’s Rotman Institute of Philosophy has announced the appointment of Dr. Carl Hoefer as the new Director, effective July 2013. Hoefer is currently ICREA Research Professor of Philosophy at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and affiliated with the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA), a foundation supported by the Catalan Government and guided by a Board of Trustees. His primary interest is in the metaphysics of nature, and his recent work concerns the nature of objective probability as revealed by its uses in many branches of science and other human activities.

Hoefer previously held appointments at University of California Riverside and the London School of Economics, where he was the Director of the Centre for Philosophy of Natural and Social Sciences (CPNSS). Since autumn of 2002 Hoefer has been an ICREA and member of the UAB philosophy department. He is also Editor in Chief of a new international journal, the European Journal for Philosophy of Science, published by Springer.

Dr. Genoveva Martí Campillo, another ICREA Research Professor at UAB, will also be joining the Department of Philosophy at Western, though not until July 2014. Her career includes previous appointments at the University of Washington, Seattle, University of California Riverside, and London School of Economics. She is primarily interested in the exploration of reference, that is, the relation that obtains between expressions and what speakers use expressions to talk about.

The Rotman Institute of Philosophy at Western University brings together philosophers and scientists to examine some of the most complex issues and most engrossing problems emerging from contemporary science. For more information, visit www.rotman.uwo.ca
