Western University and IBM are hosting a four-day Industry Problem Brainstorming Workshop on Tuesday, February 19 where teams from Western will put their heads together to solve complex problems for local industry.
Each participating business was invited to pose a challenging problem, which will be assigned to a team on the first day. The teams, made up of approximately 50 undergraduate students, graduate students and faculty from the departments of Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mathematics and Statistical & Actuarial Science, will spend the remainder of the week collaborating on ways to solve the problems and present their findings on the final day of the workshop.By using their combined experience and knowledge, the teams will utilize the expertise and analytic tools provided by IBM to help them arrive at the best solution as they compete to win the inaugural Data Analytics Problem Solving (DAPS) trophy.
There was no cost to business to participate and each team’s solution strategies will include details of government incentives for hiring students and funding opportunities for the research projects.
The event begins at 9:00am on Tuesday, February 19 with opening remarks from London Mayor Joe Fontana and Western’s Dean of Science, Charmaine Dean.
Sponsored by IBM, Ontario Centres of Excellence, Mitacs, NSERC and the City of London, the workshop is modeled on the format of the Fields-MITACS Industrial Problem-Solving Workshops.
