Western University will host London’s engineers, scientists, and innovators of the future as local students ages 9-14 work together to design and build LEGO robots in the 2014 FIRST LEGO League London Qualifying Tournament on Saturday, December 6.

Presented by the Western Engineering FIRST Robotics Mentorship Club (WE FIRST), the event is part of a larger international program that introduces students to real-world engineering challenges by building LEGO-based robots to complete tasks on a thematic playing surface.

WE FIRST provides an open atmosphere where Western students mentor and support students from London-area schools as they explore robotics. Under the mentorship of their coaches, teams use their imaginations to create their robots while discovering new career possibilities, learning how their work could make a positive contribution to solving a real world problem, and presenting their solutions.

Last year, the winning team from this event went on to finish third at the provincial tournament and then competed in California.

Speakers at this year’s tournament include, The Honourable Ed Holder, Minister of State (Science and Technology), Andrew Hrymak, Dean of Western Engineering, and Bill Tucker, Visiting Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education.

The FIRST Lego League London Qualifying Tournament is free for the general public to attend.
