For 10 years, Dr. Mark Awuku has been at the heart of Western University’s Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry – Windsor Program, a passionate and dedicated educator and leader committed to the School and the local community itself.
On September 2, 2015, Schulich Medicine & Dentistry – Windsor Program will celebrate Dr. Awuku’s extensive and significant contributions to the Windsor Program as he steps down from his role as Assistant Dean, Faculty and Governmental Affairs.
Graduating from The University of Ghana Medical School in 1975, Dr. Awuku completed his residency in paediatrics at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. He is an associate professor, Paediatrics, and works at Windsor Regional Hospital. Dr. Awuku will continue to serve the Windsor Program in educational and mentorship capacities.
In 2010, Dr. Awuku assumed the role of Acting Associate Dean at the Windsor Program at a critical stage in the School’s development. The following year, he was recognized for his contributions to the Windsor community with the Business Professional of the Year Award by the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce. Dr. Awuku also served as the Academic Director of Paediatrics for the Southwestern Ontario Medical Education Network (SWOMEN).
Dr. Awuku has always had a passion for teaching and has won numerous teaching awards including the Loewen, Ondaatje, McCutcheon & Company Educational Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching by a Senior (Post Core) Resident, Best Fellow ICU Award, Best Teacher Award (Schulich Medicine & Dentistry’s Department of Paediatrics, 2004), and Best Teacher Award for SWOMEN (2004-2008). In 2005, he was awarded the PARO Excellence in Clinical Teaching Award and the Ontario Medical Association Student Advocate Award in 2008. That same year, Dr. Awuku was awarded the Green Shield Scholar of Medical Education for being a renowned medical educator, his contributions to the development of SWOMEN, and the success of the Windsor clerkship program.
“In so many ways, Dr. Awuku deserves credit for the excellence we have achieved at the Windsor Program,” said Dr. Gerry Cooper, associate dean, Windsor Program. “He brings out the best in learners and colleagues alike, and we are extremely appreciative of his many important contributions to the School.”
“Dr. Awuku has been an outstanding ambassador for the Windsor Program,” said Dr. Margaret Steele, vice dean, Hospital & Interfaculty Relations, Schulich Medicine & Dentistry. “As a paediatrician, he is respected and loved by his patients and their families. As an educator and leader, Dr. Awuku has made it his mission to ensure that the Windsor Program is a destination of choice for students and faculty.”
Media are invited to attend the annual Meet & Greet in the atrium of the Dr. Murray O’Neil Medical Education Centre, 401 Sunset Avenue. The event is an opportunity for faculty, staff and current students to welcome the Medicine Class of 2019 and celebrate the contributions of Dr. Awuku. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the formal program begins at 6:00 p.m.
