Western University’s Faculty of Education, in conjunction with the Ontario Principals’ Council, is launching a new specialization in International School Leadership in their Master of Professional Education program.

The program specialization has been designed to meet the unique needs of active and aspiring school leaders around the world by providing a combination of real-world knowledge with scholarly, researched-based best practices and theory.

“We recognize the desire from current and future international school leaders to hone their skills through a combination of theory and practice,” said Vicki Schwean, Dean of the Faculty of Education. “This specialization will enable students to learn from both dedicated practitioners who have built their careers in the field, and from researchers and professors who have spent their lives conducting scholarly work and bringing thoughtful approaches to education.”

The program specialization has been developed, and will be taught jointly, with International School Leadership Inc., a subsidiary of the Ontario Principals’ Council that focuses on delivering learning opportunities to international school leaders.

Delivered fully online, the Master of Professional Education program’s International School Leadership specialization is accessible to a global audience, and built to have a significant impact on helping meet the growing demand for leadership in international schools.

“This is a truly unique program that focuses not just on leading a school, but on leading a school in a manner that will improve student achievement,” said Joanne Robinson, CEO of International School Leadership Inc. “International and private schools are eager to see their organizations in the hands of skilled leaders, and the quality of this degree enables it to stand on its own as a qualification for that level of responsibility.”

Though the program specialization is international in scope, Schwean and Robinson hope to see educational leaders in Ontario and across Canada pursue it in order that the knowledge and skills if offers can help those enrolled improve the quality of leadership in schools in this country as well.

The new specialization continues Western Education’s tradition of being on the leading edge of education in Canada and around the world.

Western Education’s MPEd in the field of International School Leadership is slated to begin in September 2017, and is currently accepting applications.
