Western University has long been internationally recognized for its excellence in neuroscience research. From developing and advancing innovative imaging technology to deciphering the neural basis for cognitive functions, Western cultivates an integrated approach to studies of the brain that brings together some of the most accomplished minds in the world at the forefront of this interdisciplinary study.
This weekend, a special event on campus aims to encourage and foster the next generation of these extraordinary thinkers as Western hosts the London Brain Bee on Saturday, April 21.
Part of a worldwide initiative, the London Brain Bee is open to high school students from London and surrounding area. The winner of the London Brain Bee will advance to the Canadian National Brain Bee at McMaster in May and the national winner will represent Canada at the International Brain Bee competition, which will be held in Berlin this year.
Graduate students from the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, the Faculty of Science and the Departments of Neuroscience and Psychology are volunteering for the Brain Bee, and the event will also feature representation from Western’s Brain and Mind Institute and BrainsCAN – Western’s $66M Canada First Research Excellence Fund program in cognitive neuroscience.
The London Brain Bee competition, which is free for participants, will be held at the new Western Interdisciplinary Research Building (WIRB). Students, who will explore a real human brain specimen during the competition, compete individually by answering questions based on an introductory neuroscience booklet.
Every registered participant receives a Brain Bee T-shirt and the first, second and third place winners will be awarded trophies.
