International Observe the Moon Night is an annual event, led by NASA, the Solar System Exploration Research Virtual Institute, the Lunar and Planetary Institute and partners around the world, which is dedicated to encourage observation, appreciation and understanding of our Moon.
For the seventh year, Western University’s Centre for Planetary Science and Exploration (CPSX) in collaboration with the Canadian Lunar Research Network, Western’s Department of Physics & Astronomy, and the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (London Chapter) are hosting a family-friendly event at the Hume Cronyn Memorial Observatory to engage the community of southwestern Ontario to be curious about not only our closest celestial neighbour, the Moon, but also about the interesting moons of other planets.
This year’s event is slated for Saturday, October 8 and runs from 5 to 10 p.m.

Visitors will be able to observe the Moon using Cronyn’s 10-inch main telescope, as well as other telescopes, and there will also be a display of lunar and Martian rocks, as well as other meteorites.
Catherine Neish, an Associate Professor in Western’s Department of Earth Sciences, will give a public talk on moons while Phil Stooke, an Associate Professor in Western’s Department of Geography, will present a talk on the Apollo space missions.
There will also be a hands-on eclipse, moon phases and impact cratering activities and arts and crafts for children too.
Free parking is available at the Alumni Hall parking lot for this event.
