WADA taps Richard McLaren to head Sochi Olympics investigation team

World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) President Sir Craig Reedie has appointed Western University’s Richard H. McLaren as the independent person heading an investigation team tasked with probing doping allegations related to the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

McLaren, a renowned international sports lawyer and a professor at Western’s Faculty of Law, was one of WADA’s three-person Independent Commission, led by founding WADA President Richard W. Pound, which exposed widespread doping in the All-Russia Athletic Federation. McLaren will work independently and be supported by the multi-disciplinary team that has been established by WADA.

Counsel to McKenzie Lake Lawyers LLP and CEO of McLaren Global Sports Solutions Inc., McLaren has significant experience in the world of international sports law, including being a longstanding member of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

He has been a member of the ad hoc Divisions of CAS at the Winter Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan (1998) and Turin, Italy (2006) and the Summer Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia (2000), Athens, Greece (2004) Beijing, China (2008).
