The last Wednesday of September is marked each year as Rowan’s Law Day. The day raises awareness about concussion in sport in memory of Rowan Stringer, a 17-year-old athlete who died from complications related to concussions. Western University has the following experts available to discuss concussion awareness and research:
Alison Doherty
Professor, Kinesiology
Areas of expertise: Recognition and reporting of concussions, safer sport culture in high performance sport.
Haojie Mao
Assistant Professor, Engineering
Areas of expertise: Understanding mechanisms of mild traumatic brain injury, engineering solutions in helmets to better protect the brain.
Ravi Menon
Professor, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry
Areas of expertise: Effect of concussions, brain impacts on athletes including chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), link between concussions and neurodegenerative diseases (i.e. Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s), functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).
