Washington’s NFL team announced today that it will be retiring its team nickname and logo. A new team name will be announced at a later date.
Janice Forsyth, Director of Western University’s Indigenous Studies, is available to media for comment.
“It’s too bad it took corporate pressure and a nationwide reckoning with racism to change the name, when there has been significant public pressure and research already dedicated to bringing about change. It’s about time this happened. Corporate sponsors need to do a better job of helping social movements that advance our collective humanity, and team owners need to get on board with these movements too and stop being so divisive.”
A member of the Fisher River Cree Nation, Forsyth investigates the history of Indigenous physical activity and culture and how it can be used to understand the history of Indigenous-settler relations in Canada.
